There are 5  whisky regions – —Speyside, Islay, Highlands, Lowlands, and Campbeltown. Each of the five official whisky regions in Scotland has its own personality, shaped by the land, the water, and the traditions of the people who craft it.

Whether you’re new to whisky or already have a favorite dram, this quick guide will help you explore what makes each region unique—and maybe even help you pick your next pour when you visit us.

Speyside: Sweet, Smooth, and Perfect for Beginners

📍 Where is it? Northeastern Scotland, around the River Spey
Tastes like: Honey, apple, vanilla, and gentle spice
Famous names: Glenfiddich, Macallan, Glenlivet

Speyside is the heartland of Scotch whisky, with more distilleries than anywhere else in the country. If you like your whisky elegant and easy-drinking, this is the region to start with. It’s also amazing with dessert—try it with cranachan or sticky toffee pudding and thank us later.

Islay: Smoky, Salty, and Seriously Bold

📍 Where is it? A island off Scotland’s west coast
Tastes like: Peat smoke, sea air and leather
Famous names: Ardbeg, Laphroaig, Lagavulin

Islay whiskies are unforgettable. They’re rich with smoke and sea salt, thanks to the island’s peaty soil and ocean breezes. Not everyone loves them at first, but they’re a must-try for any whisky lover. They also hold their own next to bold dishes like haggis.

Highlands: Big, Bold, and All Over the Map

📍 Where is it? Most of northern mainland Scotland
Tastes like: Depends on the area—fruity in the east, smoky and spicy in the west
Famous names: Glenmorangie, Oban, Dalmore

The Highlands are Scotland’s largest whisky region, and its flavours are just as wide-ranging. You’ll find everything from soft and floral to rich and sherried. If you’re eating something hearty—like our steak pie a Highland whisky is the perfect match.

Lowlands: Light, Easygoing, and Often Overlooked

📍 Where is it? Southern Scotland, near Edinburgh and Glasgow
Tastes like: Grass, citrus, light toffee, and floral notes
Famous names: Auchentoshan, Glenkinchie

Lowland whiskies are smooth and delicate—great for sipping before a meal. They’re also perfect with lighter bites like smoked salmon or a cheese board.

Campbeltown: Salty, Funky, and Full of Character

📍 Where is it? A small coastal town on the Kintyre peninsula
Tastes like: Brine, dried fruit and slight smoke
Famous names: Springbank, Glen Scotia

Campbeltown might be the smallest region, but its whiskies are big on personality. They’re complex, slightly quirky, and beloved by whisky nerds. If you want to try something off the beaten path, Campbeltown is calling.
